How Do I Renew My LEI?
-
Renewing a Legal Entity Identifier (LEI) ensures that your entity's LEI record remains active, up to date, and recognized in regulatory and financial systems.
LEI data must be renewed regularly. If an LEI is not renewed by its next renewal date, its registration status may change to LAPSED, which can create inconveniences with regulatory reporting, onboarding, financial transactions, or counterparty checks.
This article explains when, why, and how to renew your LEI.

When Should I Renew My LEI?
LEI records are renewed annually. The next renewal date is normally one year after the initial registration or previous renewal.
An LEI can be renewed up to 60 days before its next renewal date, and renewing early helps reduce the risk of the record becoming lapsed.
Renewing early does not shorten the remaining validity period. The next renewal date is extended from the existing renewal date rather than from the day you submit the renewal.
If you have selected a multi-year LEI plan, the annual renewal process can be handled automatically. You may still be contacted if your entity information has changed or additional verification is required.
You can check your current LEI status and next renewal date using the GetLEI Lookup Tool.

Quick LEI Renewal Steps
For GetLEI Clients
If your LEI is already managed through GetLEI, renewal is straightforward.
GetLEI acts as a Registration Agent working with Ubisecure RapidLEI, the GLEIF-accredited LEI issuer responsible for issuing and maintaining the LEI record.
To renew your LEI:
- Log in to your Client Area.
- Find the LEI that is approaching its next renewal date (<60 days until expiration)
- Click on the Renew button and proceed with the renewal order placement.
- Review the entity information associated with the LEI.
- Confirm or update any information that has changed.
- Wait until the organization details are revalidated and renewal completed. Please note that the additional information may be requested.
As part of the process, the entity information is checked against available business-registry data.
If the information remains unchanged, the renewal can usually be processed quickly. If differences are detected, additional verification may be required before the LEI record is renewed.
Current renewal options and pricing are available on the GetLEI pricing page.
For Clients of Other LEI Providers
If your LEI is currently managed by another LEI issuer or Registration Agent, it must first be transferred before GetLEI can manage its renewal.
The LEI itself does not change during a transfer. The same 20-character LEI remains assigned to the legal entity; only responsibility for managing the record moves to the receiving LEI issuer.
Kindly choose the Renewal +Transfer package on the GetLEI website.
Once the transfer is complete, the LEI can be renewed and managed through GetLEI.

What Information Is Required to Renew an LEI?
To renew your LEI, you will generally need:
- your existing LEI code;
- access to the associated account or email address;
- confirmation of the entity's current reference data;
- updated entity information if anything has changed since the previous registration or renewal.
Most of the existing LEI data is already available from the previous record, so the renewal process primarily focuses on confirming that this information remains accurate.

Why Is It Important to Keep Your LEI Active?
A Legal Entity Identifier provides a standardized way to identify your organization within the global financial system. To keep the associated reference data current, the LEI record must be renewed regularly.
If an LEI is not renewed by its next renewal date, its status may change to LAPSED in the Global LEI Index. This can create problems where an active LEI is required, including regulatory reporting, financial transactions, payments, Know Your Business (KYB) checks, and onboarding with financial institutions.
Keeping your LEI active helps ensure that your entity information remains verified and up to date. It can also:
- support regulatory compliance;
- reduce interruptions to financial transactions;
- simplify entity and counterparty verification;
- improve transparency;
- keep organizational data current in the Global LEI Index.
For organizations that rely on an LEI for reporting or financial activities, renewing it on time helps avoid unnecessary delays and operational issues.

Renew Your LEI for Multiple Years
Annual LEI renewal can create an administrative burden, particularly for organizations managing several entities or relying on one employee to track renewal dates.
Multi-year LEI plans can simplify this process.
With a multi-year plan, the LEI record is still revalidated each year, but the renewal process is managed automatically for the selected period.
This can help organizations:
- reduce annual administration;
- lower the risk of an accidental lapse;
- keep LEI reference data current;
- manage renewal dates more easily;
- benefit from multi-year pricing where available.
GetLEI offers LEI plans for multiple years, with annual data verification included as part of the renewal process.
Current options are available on the GetLEI pricing page.

Conclusion
Keeping your Legal Entity Identifier active is essential for maintaining accurate entity information and meeting applicable regulatory and financial requirements.
Renewing your LEI before its next renewal date helps prevent it from becoming LAPSED and reduces the risk of delays in reporting, transactions, onboarding, or counterparty checks.
If your LEI is already managed through GetLEI, you can renew it through your account. If it is managed by another provider, you can first transfer it to GetLEI and then complete the renewal.
