Who Can Get an LEI?
-
Any organization recognized as a legal entity can get an LEI, from limited companies to funds, charities, and government bodies. Individuals can't. Here's who qualifies, who doesn't, and how a few special cases work.

Who Can Get an LEI
- Businesses. Limited companies and other registered companies, sole proprietors listed in a business register, and branches of foreign companies.
- Funds and trusts. Investment funds, trusts, and similar structures.
- Non-profits. Registered charities, NGOs, and other recognized non-profit organizations.
- Government bodies. Government departments, public agencies, and international organizations.

Who Can't Get an LEI
- Individuals. A private person can't hold an LEI.
- Parts of a company. Operating divisions, departments, and trading names aren't separate legal entities, so they use the LEI of the company they belong to.
- Branches in the same country as the head office. These also use the head office's LEI.
- Sole proprietors without a register listing. Without an official record, there's nothing to verify the LEI data against. Whether sole proprietors get their own entry depends on the country, so check your local register first.
Important: Each legal entity can have only one LEI. If your company already has one with another provider, don't register a new one. Transfer it to GoGetSSL instead.

Special Cases
Foreign branches. A branch can get its own LEI only if it's located in a different country from its head office. The head office must already have an LEI, and the branch's record is linked to it.
Umbrella funds. An umbrella fund and each of its sub-funds are identified separately, so every sub-fund needs its own LEI.

Who Can Submit the Application
The application must come from someone authorized to act on behalf of the entity. This can be an employee of the entity or a third party, such as a parent company or a service provider, as long as the entity has given it explicit permission to apply.
